Updates on the Culinary Life Skills Program

Updated: Nov 12

We’re excited to share the latest progress from our Culinary Life Skills Program at the Quang Tri School for Children with Disabilities (QTSCD). Every step forward brings us closer to launching a program that will empower hearing-disabled students with essential cooking, gardening, and life skills.

Home Visits: Connecting with Families in Vinh Linh District

Last week, we had the privilege of visiting some of our young beneficiaries from Vinh Linh district in their homes. This outreach gave us the opportunity to meet the families of our students, including Le Thanh Hai, Nguyen Xuan Long and Le Duc Hai. We’re so grateful to these families for warmly welcoming us into their kitchens. The enthusiasm from parents and siblings alike was inspiring, and we’re thrilled to provide resources that will support each child in developing essential culinary skills.

Our visits also helped us assess the kitchen tools each child has available. By ensuring that students have the support needed to practice cooking skills at home, we’re creating a strong foundation for them to build confidence outside the classroom. With these resources, each family will play an integral role in their child’s journey toward self-sufficiency and independence.

Classroom Setup: 80% Completed!

Our construction efforts are moving quickly, with 80% of the work now complete! We’re thrilled to report that new classrooms, essential installations like air conditioning, plumbing, and electrical systems are now ready to use. Each of our working stations is fully set up to accommodate two children, creating an inclusive environment where students can learn and collaborate.

Inside the classroom, everything is falling into place. We’re pleased to announce that we’ve received all the pots and utensils needed for each child and their teachers to practice cooking and food preparation skills. Two new racks have been installed to keep materials organized and accessible, making the space easy for students to use. With this setup, every child has their own designated area for hands-on learning, helping them develop a sense of ownership and pride in their progress.

Outdoor Spaces: Preparing for Student Gardens

One of the most exciting aspects of our program is the opportunity for each student to nurture their own small garden! We’ve cleared and prepared the outdoor area to accommodate individual garden plots, giving students a hands-on way to learn about gardening, responsibility, and the joy of growing fresh ingredients. These personal gardens will provide ingredients to cook everyday. This garden is also a  practical experience that students can carry with them into their daily lives, fostering valuable life skills.

A Heartfelt Thank You to our Partners

None of this would be possible without the unwavering support from our partners, and everyone involved in bringing this vision to life. Your generosity and dedication have fueled our progress, and we’re so grateful to have you by our side as we move forward.

As we approach the program’s official launch in January, we look forward to sharing more updates on this journey. Stay tuned for the latest as we continue transforming lives through culinary and life skills education!
