Our Story
In the early '90s, Marcia Selva, founder of the adventure travel company Global Spectrum Travel (GS), pioneered bringing Americans to Vietnam for tourism. Ms. Selva, enamored with Vietnam and driven by a commitment to support the underprivileged, established the Global Community Service Foundation (GCSF) as GS's philanthropic arm. GCSF, a 501c3 Virginia-based charity, provided humanitarian assistance in healthcare, education, and income generation activities in Vietnam, envisioning empowered communities.
Since 2004, GCSF collaborated with local partners to foster dignified and productive lives in Vietnam, earning recognition from the Vietnamese government and its people. With a capable Vietnamese staff, the foundation made significant contributions until its closure in April 2018.
The Community Development Fund (CDF) emerged as the successor to GCSF, focusing on the central province of Quang Tri from 2018. Dedicated to empowering local disadvantaged people, CDF concentrated on environment, healthcare, and education. Facing financial challenges intensified by COVID-19 in 2020, CDF underwent restructuring, placing a renewed emphasis on environmental initiatives.
In this transformation, CDF aims to create a sustainable community where human well-being harmonizes with nature's health. The organization has embraced a forward-looking strategy by integrating a team of young environment activists and specialists. This story highlights the admirable journey of GCSF's philanthropy evolving into CDF, showcasing resilience, adaptability, and a sustained commitment to community development in Vietnam.
