Enhancement of Carbon capture and Forest management practices for community climate resilience
Quang Tri province and the broader Central Vietnam region have been facing severe impacts from climate change, including increasingly unpredictable and extreme weather events such as intense storms, flooding, and prolonged droughts. These environmental changes have threatened local ecosystems, agricultural productivity, and community livelihoods, heightening the need for effective and sustainable climate action.
One approach to addressing these challenges is the implementation of community-based carbon capture and storage projects through nature-based solutions. This method leverages local ecosystems, particularly forests, to absorb and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. By actively involving communities in these initiatives, the projects not only support climate mitigation efforts but also foster resilience among local populations. Engaging communities helps protect and manage forested areas, ensuring long-term carbon storage while also maintaining the biodiversity and natural resources essential for community well-being.
The recent project in Quang Tri, completed in October 2024 with sponsorship from Catholic Relief Services (CRS), exemplifies this approach. By focusing on nature-based solutions and community engagement, this initiative has strengthened local capacity to adapt to climate change impacts. Through this project, residents have gained essential knowledge and tools to manage and protect forests effectively, contributing to both environmental preservation and the economic resilience of their communities.

Fight against riverbank erosion
The project aims at filling the deserted edge of a stream in Cua Valley with 1500 plants of chinaberry, nacre and acacia. It helps to reduce the erosion caused by flooding annually to this area and the cultivatable land next to the area. The project is implemented in October 2021 with the partnership from Keo Son Forestry Farm Cooperative. The project is funded by German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
